This is my shortest Belgium post but I thought putting it with my first Belgium post would have made it waaaaay too long. Tuesday and Wednesday will also be posted separately.
Monday
I woke up on Monday morning to the aroma of freshly cooked bread, eggs, and bacon. The BnB I was with made an amazing breakfast fit for the Queen – watermelon, chocolate spread, cherries, hot chocolate, and biscuits. It was safe to say during my time in Belgium I made the most of pigging out I had nothing planned for Monday morning, so I relaxed a bit and skyped Mum and Dad to tell them about yesterday’s hectic journey here.
I’d arranged with Patrick and his wife to go to the In Flanders Fields Museum with them at 11 am. Once again, the walk into town was amazing as the buildings were like nothing I’d seen in France. I found the museum with no trouble, it was in the town centre and maybe one of the longest and magnificent buildings I’d ever seen in my life. I tried to take a photo of it but it was too tall and long to fit in the frame. We spent about 4 hours looking through the museum and I got quite emotional, the photos were very graphic (rotting bodies, piles of bones and deformed faces from the gas…) and knowing that all this had happened where I was, was quite scary.
Afterward, I split up and explored the town alone. Most of the shops were closed apart from food and souvenir shops, so I was able to explore the town’s historical monuments without any distractions – apart from the waffles/ice cream shop that is! Basically, my technique of finding things was to put the map in my bag and get hideously lost on purpose! That way, I found I saw more of the town and became very familiar with it, I found some awesome buildings and met lots of people. By the time I was ready for dinner my feet were covered in blisters after 4 hours of aimlessly walking – but I had the biggest smile plastered on my face. It felt so good to be exploring! Monday was the only night I ate dinner alone, it was a little depressing but going to the famous Belgium chocolate shops after and finding orange peel dipped in chocolate made my day ;D
