La trente-sixième semaine(36)

School is rocking along all good now, classes are interesting, my friends are as great as ever and I even had my first flute lesson after the break which turned out amazing despite neglecting my poor flute.

Last weekend I went to Virginia’s birthday party and stayed over at her house on the Friday night. She lives an hour away from my host family and the scenary is different from anything here, there are a lot of rolling hills, bush, farm land and old tabaco drying sheds everywhere. Her family were really nice, the only thing that Virginia forgot to tell me was that they smoke. And not just a small smoke here and there, these guys smoke more Thomas the Tank Engine! From the second we went through the front door the scent smashed me in the face, and I never once saw them without a cigarette. Pretty early into the evening I was puffing away at my inhaler and we had a bit of scare when it got worse during the night. It was quite a stressful night and I tried my best not to make a fuss, but I ended up having to ask them to smoke outside while I was there because of my asthma. It didn’t help that there peanuts and chips for nibbles!

The next morning we prepared for the birthday party, everyone arrived at about 2pm, and we just chilled, ate cake, and had a good laugh, it was a great time. Unfortunately I didn’t stay the night like all the others, I decided it would be safer to go back to my house for the night after my bad asthma the night before, even though the parents weren’t smoking inside, the smell was still very present lingering in the air. My friends were really good about it thankfully:)

The other other news is that Ilona’s (my friend who did a 3 month German exchange) exchange student Anna arrived on Monday. Her french is a little bit better than mine was when I arrived, but just hearing her accent and the thought process it took to form one simple phrase really made me realise how far I’ve come language wise! She is very nice, but I don’t really know her as it’s only been 2 days and she looks shell-shocked each time I see her.
